A young Haibane—a person with a halo and little gray wings—awakens from a cocoon in the town of Old Home to a world she doesn't comprehend since she has no memories of her history. Rakka is named after her fantasy of falling while inside the cocoon, and she quickly adapts to life in the unusual town. The Haibane, on the other hand, are subject to rigorous laws, such as not leaving the village or going near the walls that encircle it. These, along with strange disappearances of their species on their "Day of Flight," start to worry Rakka and the others, who know very nothing about their own sort. Haibane Renmei covers not just Rakka's narrative, but also the stories of everyone around her as they go about their daily lives.
